TSA PreCheck vs Global Entry

Do you wish you could jump into the empty security line at the airport? That empty, shorter line is the TSA PreCheck line for travelers approved to use this line. The simplest explanation of TSA PreCheck is that it is a pre-screening service for domestic travelers. Global Entry is the best service, in my opinion, because Global Entry works for domestic security lines and quick re-entry security lines into the USA after traveling abroad.

TSA PreCheck

First, TSA PreCheck is a domestic airport lines program that pre-screening travelers so they can go through security checkpoints faster. Next, Global Entry service makes re-entering the USA from international travel faster. So, if you need one pre-screening entry service and you plan to enjoy international travel, then Global Entry is the best for you.

Global Entry

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) runs the Global Entry service. The program pre-approves and expedites clearance for low-risk travelers arriving into the United States. Members enter the United States through electronic kiosks at select airports. Global Entry members are also eligible to participate in TSA PreCheck and other foreign countries entry program such as the Netherland.

TSA PreCheck Summary

TSA PreCheck grants access to a separate security line that is typically never more than a 5-10 minute wait. This line used to allow you to keep your shoes, belt & jacket on. Additionally, laptops and liquids stay in your bag during screening. Read the signs because I find this is changing. This TSA PreCheck service costs $85 for five years. Finally, don’t forget, the fee is submitted at application, so the $85 is up front as an application fee and it is nonrefundable.

Now What?

You’ll get an email letting you know whether you’ve been pre-approved after you submit your request. If you’re conditionally pre-approved, next, schedule an interview appointment. My application made on December 1st. My pre-approval came in an email on December 14th.

The Interview

My interview went very smoothly. It was very relaxed, and the agent was very professional. My agent was helpful; I even saw a smile. I answered all his questions with short answers and was quickly approved.

The final step, after your acceptance in the program, is your ID card arrives in a couple of weeks. If you need to travel sooner, you use the TSA PreCheck or Global Entry ID number. You can find the number on your appointment email.

TSA PreCheck or Global Entry reduces anxiety, stress level and makes travel a little more relaxing. Enjoy the short line from now on!

    • hi Jim, So glad you like Global Entry. When I am tired some ties the Kiosk and my brain don't work well together. But, other than that I like it too.
