Best is a perception. The U.S. has more guns than all but three countries in the world, and a higher level of gun-related violence than many first-world countries. However, it is still a highly desired place to visit for many foreign tourists and Americans. But, if you ask most people, how they feel, you will get many different answers? They will answer that they feel best in the USA. In DC I tried to borrow a cell phone since mine was dead to ask my daughter to pick me up. After asking four strangers, everyone said ‘no’ to me. So, people keep themselves safe from crime by the choices they make.
Define Best
This is a true story that happened to me while I was recently in DC.
In DC in the height of the tourist season, I tried to borrow a cell phone from a man since mine was dead. Explaining, I was trying to call my daughter to pick me up. After asking four strangers, everyone said ‘no’. So, people keep to themselves to stay safe and away from crime. By choosing not to share a phone they feel the prevent a robbery. People make choices everyday to stay safe, and therefore do not lend their cell. So is this type of behavior hospitable, nope. But, people feel it makes them feel safe. But no one is really safe, any one can be victimized. So the way people act makes them feel a place is safe. The way they do in the USA and therefore, they consider it one of the ‘best’ place to visit.
By the way I have repeated that story in Italy, Turkey and Trance, people always lend me their phone.
So after asking four strangers, everyone said ‘No’ to me. They darted by, Not one person offered to place a call for me or asked me why I needed to borrow the phone. I was well dressed, polite, and spoke English. So, why did this happen?
I believe, it happened because people keep to themselves and to feel safe from crime. They perceived me as a potential criminal, a crime risk, a possible mugging or they were just too busy and couldn’t be bothered. I felt people were unkind, not helpful and the best places for me in the world is where people are kind and friendly, and there are interesting things to see. So we can agree, that we do need kindness, warm culture and hospitability on the perfect list of Top 10 Best World Travel places.
My Experience
For me, the best places are cultural or nature locations. So America is still the best place. But, an encounter I had in Morocco may add some context to my view of best. A few years ago, I got injured by a cab driver in Morocco at a taxi stand area. He popped the trunk into my face. I was bleeding everywhere. Certainly, I was in a good location at a taxi stand next to the train station.
Eventually, the taxi driver out of fear took me to my hotel. Once I arrived at my hotel, the secret police, military, and undercover police and a medic were there immediately to help me. They all arrived in a matter of seconds, not minutes. The criminal ‘taxi driver’ then fled and under Moroccan law, he was arrested, put in jail, and lost his car. Because he ran away, he was automatically found guilty. Under their Moroccan law, Sharia Law, I was now his responsibility which meant my medical bills, housing, and expenses were now his responsibility. The man, the taxi driver, who injured me paid a massive fine 900 euros just to get out of jail. He had to pay restitution, and then the second fine. Does strick law and incarceration make a location one of the Top 10 Places to Visit i.n the World
All Justice Isn’t Equal
Under their Moroccan law, Sharia Law, I was now his responsibility which meant my medical bills, housing, and expenses were now his responsibility. He never paid anything to me, or my bills so I don’t actually know who got the money.
So is this how we should measure what is best for you? Quick justice, immediate medical care and paying the price for a crime.
Or is it the location and what you see that defines the Top 10 Best Places to Travel in the World to see. so do you need justice and equality for all for a country to be on the list?

Enjoyed the article, Kate. It's still sometimes fun to explore countries, such as Colombia and Egypt, that have an "edginess" about them. Too safe can be boring and unexpected thrills are usually the norm in countries most Americans, at least, would consider to be "unsafe."
I remember flying Egyptair departing Cairo for Aswan. We took off in a blinding dust storm. I was looking out of the window, completely thrilled, because I was experiencing something few people ever get to do. That's what travel does for me....it makes me feel alive, because there are periods of time when your experience becomes surreal...kind of like a movie in slow motion, and you are, if even for just a moment, the star actor in your own show.
Cheers!
I get need adrenalin but, sometimes in today's world, where traveling by its nature is less safe than it used to be, Americans, I believe need to travel smartly, wisely and be cautious. It's probably wise to fill your need for drama through the State department, to listen to S.T.E.P. guidance and the State Department.
