Visit Mount Vernon Slave Quarters

The most interesting area of Mount Vernon, home of our first president is the slave quarters. They are interesting to me because they remind me that at Mount Vernon the slaves were important and essential part of ur first presidence’s life. Most importantly, they lived with the presidential family as part of his family. Surely, they were not equal to the first family’s residence, but they weren’t hidden like the slave quarters at Monticello, home of our third president. I found this part of the historical site to be authentic and way more important then the interior home. But, I have to say, I don’t know much about slavery or slave quarters. So I am saying this with some hesitation because I don’t know much about slavery.

The slave quarters located at the back of the greenhouse makes a segregated location while still part of the main property. To me, the outside grounds are way more interesting and by far the most interesting part of the historic site.

On this dreary day, I felt more connected to my past because when I’m cold, my gratitude for warm clothing and my comfortable life is greatly appreciated.

I think when I visit my country’s historic past, I feel connected to my future. We had to pay attention to my daughter’s baby while we were traveling. So there were times, we were more ficused on the baby than Mout Vernon. The tourist traffic is very heavy during any holiday. So I suggest, if you are traveling with small children, don’t even bother to stand in line for the tour of the interior of the President’s house. Enjoy the views, the grounds, and the other houses which don’t require standing in line. The whole site is very relaxed. So relaxed that the guard allowed us to lay a baby blanket down so he could rest on it.

Travel tip: enjoy the grounds at Mount Vernon and pay your repect to the slave quaters!
